Hardriful yet wonderful

“hardriful” is not exactly the opposite of “wonderful”

In The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows (2021), John Koenig introduces us to words for emotions we may have had in passing or that have “sat with us awhile” yet we did not have names for them. “Sonder” is one: it means to realize that each person we encounter or with whom we may intersection briefly is living a full and complicated life no matter how “flat” the picture we may draw of them is.

One friend in our book club noted that she experiences overload as if her “hard drive is full” and we agreed about that feeling about being unable to absorb yet one more fact or execute yet one more responsibility.

“Hard drive full” can be HAR DRI FUL = hardriful

Perhaps the reality is not wonderful but it might be a little more tolerable now that the syndrome has a name!
